Lime

Gippsland’s soils, being in a high rainfall area have a natural tendency to be acidic, i.e. have a low pH. Export of product, being milk, meat, fodder, crops can increase the rate of acidification in soils.

Benefits

• Lime raises the soil pH and lowers the level of acidity, therefore enabling an environment for desirable plant species to be productive.
• Increase soil calcium and magnesium levels, depending on the lime applied.
• An increase in the soil pH make nutrients stored within the soil more available to plants.
• Soil conditions become more favourable for micro-biological activity to enable nutrients to be released from organic matter and nutrient elements.
• Nitrate production and nitrogen fixation by the nodule bacteria on legume roots can increase through the release of Molybdenum by increasing the soil pH.
